3:00 a.m.

It’s 3:00 a.m.; do you know where your heart is? Is it broken and cast in a dark corner of your chest, alone and frightened? Does the pain hurt so bad that you want to just lie down and die? Do you cry at just the thought of what broke it in the first place? Does a certain song bring you to convulsive tears? I have been there and I know your pain, but I can’t make it go away. For this, I am truly sorry; making your pain disappear would make both of us very happy.

They say that the mind holds all the power of thought and function. I say “they” have got it all wrong. The heart holds the key to everything emotional…when your heart aches from emotions, the pain comes directly from the left side of your chest – not from the brain. No one can convince me otherwise; I know where the pain comes from. I am not an idiot!

Did you know that the intestines work regardless of brain function? So does the heart, because it has its own level of thought and function. All the brain power in the world does not control the heart’s ability to feel emotional pain. The heart is in control of that process and the brain cannot ease the pain you feel in your heart. Maybe that is why psychology has little effect in healing a broken heart.

I look back at the times my heart was broken into what seemed like a million pieces and one thought comes to mind. Only time healed my broken heart, but when you are suffering – time stands still and the ticking of a clock matches the beating of your heart. One second to the next can seem like an eternity. You can live a lifetime between one single heartbeat. You say to yourself, “Please, God, make this pain go away.” It doesn’t and you go to the next heartbeat.

It is through this process that we begin to heal…there is no shortcut I fear. Seconds turn into minutes and minutes into hours and so on until weeks and months pass. The process is slow, tedious and painful, but as surely as the sun rises, eventually we learn to live with the loss. Sorrow is replaced with the joy of knowing that life does go on and that new and exciting adventures wait to fill the void.

One day you awake knowing that the pain is just a memory and bad memories can be replaced with new ones that are bright with new hope for the future. It has always been this way and it always will be because we are human. The human heart holds the key to love and is capable of loving again and again, no matter how many times it has been broken. “It truly is better to have loved and lost than to never have loved at all.”
